Dental Crowns in Hamilton: FAQs

This week I’d like to help patients better understand Dental Crowns. The way I’d like to do this is by answering the 10 most common questions I hear regarding Dental Crowns. What are they? Are they costly? How do they help? What’s their longevity like?

Let’s jump in and answer your questions about Dental Crowns in Hamilton.

How do Dental Crowns work?

A dental crown is a metal alloy or porcelain shell that fits over a broken or weak tooth. The crown helps to make the tooth stronger so that it doesn’t break and require tooth extraction.

A crown is bonded to your tooth and is, therefore, not removable.

What do Dental Crowns look like?

Most crowns are now made of porcelain so that they look just like your natural teeth. They are white and glossy and difficult to tell apart from the other teeth in your smile. Occasionally, a gold or metal alloy crown may be more suitable for a given case but these are typically recommended for upper molar teeth that don’t show at all when you smile.

How are Dental Crowns made?

Dental crowns can be made by a commercial dental lab or, in some cases, a Dentist might have the equipment necessary to make your custom crown in-office while you wait. This technology is referred to as a “Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics” (or CEREC) machine.
